Has anyone criticizing the judges actually been a judge sitting in the box? I have. It is an incredibly difficult job and you are focused on looking at a whole picture and making as fair a comparison as possible between riders, assigning a score and at the lower levels, striving to provide constructive comments on what we just saw in the movement. During the test, I am NOT looking at specific items like tack or bits or the amount of foam on the horse, but again, a whole picture. The horse also only passes directly in front of your box very briefly, and for 90%+ of the test, the movements carry the rider to the other side of the arena where you may also be at a poor angle to properly judge a movement (hence the need for multiple judges booths at the higher levels), but also the wrong angle to even see a bit of color in foam, and we do not have the benefit of zoom lenses and instant replay- everything is live and in the moment. The fact that these incidents *are* caught is the thing to praise.. Perhaps the prevalence of these issues means that there needs to be a vet sitting ringside not judging movements, but specifically looking for health issues, but it is unfair to place the blame on the judges for taking time to notice (ie, it may take a minute before the rider passes close enough to your booth to even notice any issue, and then at these levels, you want to be absolutely sure, so you have to wait until the test brings the rider back close enough to see again, which may be another couple of minutes depending on the test and the patterns and which booth you were assigned to, and there is no communication allowed between booths for impartiality, so we can't call another judge on the other side of the ring to check). If you want to blame the judges for anything, it would be the ever shifting judging standards for the movements and the politicking that goes on at the FEI levels that opens the door to riders adopting questionable riding styles..

I usually appreciate the media---journalists are important to society. They're important because they can go where the rest of us can't; and they are supposed to use that platform to promote welfare. If they fail at that in the face of injustice, they are complicit.

Of course the people involved are going to be upset The blood 1:08 is not from the bit obviously…… the horse has bitten its lip or tongue. The sport has changed the judges want explosive horses and more and more exuberance. If the horses were so scared they would piss off when the riders drop the reins at the end of their tests would they not? I wonder if the magnificent Alerich and Dr Klimke would score with all his correctness and relaxed way of going ? Check out his USA Olympic gold medal test and victory lap and the change to now is enormous in my opinion. The current horses and riders are beautiful but I feel relaxation has taken a vacation from the training scale.

What else are you gonna do when your horse is gaping so much you can see through to the opposite side of the arena? She's gotta start now - trying to trick people into thinking it's a natural state, so it doesn't look too suspicious when she pops up in Paris with what seems to be a mixture of baking soda and vinegar bubbling out of Freestyle's mouth.
